In April 2016, I spent two weeks in Senegal for the international field experience of my Teachers for Global Classrooms fellowship. Along with thirteen other U.S. educators, and two IREX staff members, I spent the first week in Dakar, Senegal's capital city, learning about Senegalese culture and history, and about its evolving education system. During the second week, my partner teacher, Mr. Frank Newman of Spokane, Washington, and I worked with host teacher Mr. Mamadou Moustapha Fall at Lycée Maba Diakhou Ba in the small city of Nioro du Rip. While at LBDB, I observed many classes, gave presentations about American schools and culture, co-taught lessons focused on letter writing, collaborated with various other teachers of English as a Foreign Language, worked with the school's English Club, and even joined a student-led arts collective to paint a mural of Cheikh Anta Diop -- an important intellectual hero in Senegal -- at the school.
