The Republic of Senegal is located in West Africa, with a population of about 14 million people. Its name comes from the Wolof phrase "Suunu Gaal," meaning "Our Boat." Senegal is an extremely diverse country where several ethnic groups live (in relative harmony) and where several languages are spoken. Of these, French is the national language, and Wolof, Fula, and Serer are the most widely spoken African languages. About 94% of Senegalese are Muslim; 4% are Christian. The de facto symbol of the country is the baobab tree.
